The Department of Education is currently operating a strategy to reduce radon levels in schools in Kerry. In a survey taken between September 1998 and June 2002, 161 schools in Kerry were tested for radon. The study was undertaken by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland. 36 of the schools surveyed were above the permissible limit. 16 were twice the limit and 7 were five times the acceptable limit for school buildings. Schools in excess of acceptable limits are required to make building alterations.
