Easter Sunday 1916 commemorations are taking place around the county today. An event commemorating the Rising gets underway in Tralee at 11am as Mayor of Tralee Municipal District, Cllr. Thomas McEllistrim, raises the Irish Flag at Páirc An Phiarsaigh, Denny Street. Unity Ankomah, student at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School, Tralee will read aloud the 1916 Proclamation, followed by an oration by history lecturer, Dr. John O’Callaghan, before the ‘Laying of the Wreath Ceremony’ at the Pearse Memorial. In Dingle, Banna Cheoil Fife & Drumma Daingean Uí Chúis will lead the Easter March on the town’s streets, beginning at 12noon. At 12.30 the Proclamation of Independence will be read aloud as Gaeilge from the 1916 memorial in the Mall, where a plaque will also be unveiled. On Valentia Island, an unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the Ring Brothers at Valentia Cable Station is scheduled for 3pm. While in Cahersiveen, the story of the Easter Rising, celebrated through music, song and dance – the events begins at Cahersiveen Community Resource Centre at 4.30pm.
