DIY retailer Homebase is closing its store in Killarney’s Deerpark Retail Park this coming Saturday. The company announced the closure of a number of its stores last year and has operated in Killarney for 10 years. Homebase’s parent company in the UK has been bought and re-branded by Australian DIY Giant Bunnings. The company in Ireland had been closing a number of its stores over the past few years. It was thought at the time that 30 people worked in the Killarney store but It’s understood this number has been steadily reducing as the over the past number of months. Deerpark Retail Park itself was purchased recently by US investment firm Davison Kepmner along with 4 other Irish retail parks for €170 million euro. There is a planning application in place for the subdivision of the 2800 sq foot unit being vacated by Homebase and its subdivision into two separate units including a mezzanine level. It is not known if the units will be put on the market for lease or if there are retailers already lined up to move in once the works are complete.
