Patients awaiting elective procedures will be hit hardest when the 30 bed unit at Tralee General closes according to Deputy Jimmy Deenihan. The Southern Health Board says the closure has come about to preserve resources at the hospital as staff will be taking annual leave during the summer months. The closure comes as figures released show the region has one of the lowest number of people on waiting lists in the country. Speaking on behalf of Health Minister Michael Martin, Junior Minister for State Brian Lenihan said people in need of emergency medical care will not be turned away.
