Today is the final date of registration with Kerry County Council for quarries operating in the county. To date 78 business have registered with the Council. The Council says quarries that registered from April 1999 are exempt from re registering with them. Up to twelve illegal quarries were under investigation by the Council for operating without planning permission. A number of cases are being contested in Circuit Courts around the County. Many quarries argue that their business was operating pre 1963 when planning permission was not required and so can legally operate today. However Kerry County Council says some of the quarries have increased their usage at the sites which is causing serious damage to service roads around the area. The Council says any quarry that fails to register before the deadline of April 28th will become an unauthorised development regardless of its previous status. It says quarries will then be the subject of enforcement proceedings.
