Daly motion leads to Government defeat in the Seanad

The Government has suffered another defeat in the Seanad this afternoon following a motion put forward by Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly. Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly from Kenmare The Kerry Senator called for the health minister to address the Seanad on a vacancy in the only pancreas transplant surgeon post in the country. The Beaumont hospital post has been vacant since the retirement of surgeon David Hickey last year. The government, which does not have a majority in the upper house at present, was defeated by 24 votes to 23 on Senator Daly’s motion calling for Minister Leo Varadkar to come before it. The passing of the motion was greeted with applause by senators on the opposition benches but led to half an hour of uncertainty. As a result of the motion being passed senators’ Order of Business for the day was amended to allow for the minister to come in. Minister Varadkar has agreed to come into the house at 9 tonight to discuss Senator Daly’s motion.
