Council’s jury out on whether litter bins lead to increase in illegal dumping

Kerry County Council has been asked to provide extra litter bins in Ballybunion to deal with an unacceptable level of dog foul. Dog Fouling The request was made by Fine Gael Cllr Mike Kennelly, who says the problem is especially acute near the Leisure Centre and towards the golf course. But Kerry County Council’s not convinced that extra bins don’t encourage illegal dumping. Cllr Mike Kennelly said even responsible dog owners, who picked up after their pets, were forced to carry the dog foul a distance until they found a litter bin because there were none at that location. He said the area between the Leisure Centre and the golf course was particularly popular for walkers. Kerry County Council says it costs €580 per bin, if they were purchased in bulk, and these could be funded through the Councillors’ Allocation or from the Councillor Specific Municipal District Operational Fund. Municipal District Manager Joan McCarthy said the council’s jury was out on whether providing more litter bins only led to an increase of illegal dumping at bins. But the council says it will look into increasing the number of bins at this location.
