Councillors may still be involved in the Southern Health Board.

Councilors could continue to be involved with the workings of the Southern Health Board even after the board as we know it is abolished. Under a new health plan for the country politicians will no longer serve on health boards come January 2005. In a new development yesterday Minister for Health Michael Martin suggested that Cllrs end their involvement in June after the local elections. This provoked an angry response from the Association of Health Boards who have threatened protest action. Kerry Cllr Tom Fleming sits on the health board and is a member of the association. He says he still hopes that public representatives can play a part in the future of the health service in the county.
