Councillors have called for an ending of Kerry County Council’s obligation to cover the cost of coroner expenses and operation of the morgue. Next year the local authority will spend almost 340,000 euro to cover these expenses. Under the Coroner’s Act the council is obliged to cover the cost of wages and expenses of holding post mortems and inquests. Council management say a bill was prepared in 2007 which proposed the transfer of this service to a national body but no progress has been made. The council said the enacting of this legislation is long overdue.
