Councillor fears for downgrading for Kerry General maternity unit

The perception that there is something lacking in maternity services at Kerry General Hospital is unfair according to a Kerry county councillor. John Joe Culloty. 1 Recent figures showed that there was an infant mortality rate of 8.2 per 1,000 births for Kerry. The HSE has clarified that this related to families with Kerry addresses and not solely those who attended the hospital. The most recent HSE figures available show a early neonatal mortality rate of three per 1,000 births, just above the national average of two. Fianna Fáil councillor, John Joe Culloty, says that if the maternity unit isn’t used by patients, the department could be downgraded. He says the services at Kerry General are as good as anywhere in the country: [audio_player src=””]
