A Kenmare councillor has called on the Minister for Agriculture to allow cattle with one tag to be sold through marts. Independent Cllr Dan McCarthy told Kerry County Council’s monthly meeting that the current system – wherby two tags are needed – is incurring unnecessary costs upon farmers. He said allowing the animal to be sold “through the ring” with one tag would alleviate the problems currently being experienced. This would also lead to less animals in the detention pen said Cllr McCarthy, as the mart could order the second tag on the same day.
