Councillor calls for improvement works at Curraheen NS on ‘Health and Safety’ grounds

A Fianna Fail councillor has called on Kerry County Council to carry out improvement works in the vicinity of Curraheen National School in Glenbeigh, on ‘Health and Safety’ grounds.

Cllr Michael Cahill was speaking at a recent South and West Kerry Municipal meeting where he proposed that a 50 km speed zone be put in place.

Mr Cahill also proposed that funding be provided for a small car park for teachers and that the existing car park be resurfaced as a matter of urgency as it was in ‘total disrepair’.

In response Kerry County Council said it is a matter for the Board of Management of the school to apply for planning permission for a new car park and to seek funding from the Department of Education and Skills.

In relation to speed limits the council said Transport Infrastructure Ireland were leading the review of speed limits on national routes and that draft maps indicating where changes to speed limits are proposed should be brought to the next Municipal District meeting.

The council added that it had included improvements to the area in front of the school in a submission to the department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs under the Clár programme.
