The annual Daniel O’Connell Commemoration takes place in at the O’Connell Tower in Dublin’s Glasnevin Cemetery tomorrow. Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council Pat McCarthy along with the Lord Mayor of Dublin’s representative Cllr Paul McAuliffe will officiate at the ceremony, along with members of the O’Connell family and representatives of the O’Connell Schools. South Kerry native Daniel O’Connell, a former Lord Mayor of Dublin and Member of Parliament was his ages’ foremost constitutional parliamentarian, his principles admired the world over. The Kerryman’s non-violent, peaceful mobilisation of the Irish people into the democratic process resulted in the achievement of Catholic Emancipation. This commemoration marks the 169th Anniversary of O’Connell’s death in Genoa in 1847. On his final pilgrimage to Rome, Daniel O’Connell’s final wish was “My body to Ireland, my heart to Rome, my soul to heaven”.
