Cork City Council backs calls to halt IT Tralee and CIT merger

Cork City Council has voted in favour of calling a halt to plans to merge Institute Technology Tralee and Cork Institute of Technology. ITT 15 Cork city councillors supported the motion brought forward by Cllr Ted Tynan which calls on Minister Jan O’Sullivan, or her successor, to suspend the proposed merger and to enter into talks with trade unions. The vote comes ahead of a one-day strike by TUI members at IT Tralee next Wednesday over the proposed merger. Management at IT Tralee and CIT are involved in a joint bid to achieve Munster Technological University status, claiming the merger would benefit both institute. However Cllr Ted Tynan claimed the merger could lead to more cutbacks and that similar mergers had not been successful: [audio_player src=”http://media.radiokerry.ie/mediamanager/embed/audio/51884/medium/”]
