A North Kerry landfill is costing Kerry County Council over €1m per year to maintain, despite being closed to the public. But the local authority insists it’s still a valuable asset and is considering proposals on its future. Operational costs at the Muingnaminnane site, including staffing, cost over €460,000 (€464,614) while loan charges amount to over €485,000 (€485,095). Aftercare of the site costs an additional €75,000. Fianna Fáil councillor John Joe Culloty had requested a breakdown of the charges. Director of Services, John Breen, acknowledged that although the costs were high, the Muingnaminnane site was still considered a significant asset. He says the council is currently evaluating proposals on what to do with the site and would inform members of this in the new year.
