Cataract suffers in Kerry waiting up to two years for operation

The quality of life of cataract sufferers in Kerry is being severely impacted with many having to wait up to two years for the operation.

That’s according to Fianna Fáil Cllr Niall Kelleher who raised the issue at yesterday’s monthly meeting of Kerry County Council.

Cllr Kelleher told the chamber in some cases people were waiting 18 months to two years for the operation.

The Rathmore councillor said he was aware of many cases – including that of his 92-year-old grandfather:

HSE figures for May of this year revealed 156 Kerry patients were awaiting treatment for cataracts with 798 people on the waiting list for the operation at South Infirmary-Victoria University Hospital, Cork.

Cllr Kelleher said the number of cases being dealt with in Kerry was disproportionate in comparison with Cork.
