There are calls for the three-and-a-half thousand asylum seekers living here in long-term direct provision, to be granted asylum this year. The chair of the group charged with examining the direct provision process says this should be done as a gesture of solidarity to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising. The group says it costs 11 thousand euro a year to accommodated a person in direct provision.

Retired judge Bryan McMahon, who’s originally from Listowel, is the chair of the working group.
He says too many people have been living in limbo without the opportunity to work.
