It`s planned a new specialist teaching unit for children with Autism will be up and running by next spring. The Department of Education has given the go-ahead for plans to build a one classroom autistic unit in St Ita’s and St Josephs school in Balloonagh, Tralee. This will cater for secondary students with mild autism. The Department has also given funding for a temporary teacher and special needs assistant in the unit, which will provide a six pupil to one student ratio. Principle TJ Barry hopes the students can start education while the unit is being built.
