The Health Service Executive says it has identified an asbestos type tile as part of renovation works at Kerry General Hospital. Preparations for refurbishment works are currently underway at the Valentia and Reask wards in the hospital. As part of the renovation project of the mental health services at Kerry General Hospital the HSE South Estates Department employed a surveying company and the asbestos type tile was identified. The HSE says the tiles will be removed by a trained contractor prior to refurbishment as was the case in the previous refurbishment in the facility. This work will be supervised by a third party independent analyst. Air sampling will be carried out continuously and a clearance certificate will be issued after the works are complete. Concerns about asbestos had been raised by the Kerry Branch of the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association.
