Ardfert schoolgirl wins national essay writing competition

An Ardfert schoolgirl has won a national essay competition for her inspirational video, ‘Someone Like Me’. Bríd Courtney of Ardfert National School arriving home after her win in the Finals of "Someone Like Me" competition in Farmleigh Bríd was the over all winner of the competition. She was met off the train at Tralee Railway Station on Thursday night, December 10th, 2015 by her family: Brendan, Deirdre, Iarla, Eoghan and Darragh Courtney. Bríd's classmates and teachers from Ardfert National School also welcomed her. Picture by  Joe Hanley   12-year-old Bríd Courtney, who is in 6th class at Ardfert National School, was the winner of the competition which  promotes positive attitudes towards disability in primary schools. Bríd, who has cerebral palsy, which affects her limbs and speech,  wrote about her experiences in a video essay. Minister of State for Equality, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin presented Bríd with her award at Farmleigh House in Dublin. Pupils and staff of Ardfert National School gathered at Tralee Railway Station last evening to welcome her home. 12-year-old Avril Barrett described the welcome and explained why BrÍd is her best friend.
