The annual commemoration of Caherciveen born Daniel O’Connell is taking place today in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin. The Liberator is being remembered on the 169th anniversary of his death in a ceremony at 12.30. Daniel O’Connell was buried in the crypt under the O’Connell Round Tower at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin following his death on this day in 1847 in Genoa. This lunchtime, at the O’Connell Tower Circle in Glasnevin Cemetery, the Caherciveen man will be remembered. Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council Pat McCarthy and representative of the Dublin Lord Mayor Councillor Paul McAuliffe will officiate at the ceremony, along with members of the O’Connell family and representatives of the O’Connell Schools. Daniel O’Connell, The Liberator, was a former Lord Mayor of Dublin and Member of Parliament. Following the commemoration, the annual O’Connell lecture will be delivered by Professor Paula Murphy of the School of Art History and Cultural Policy at University College Dublin, on John Henry Foley’s monument to Daniel O’Connell.
