60 traditional pot fishing licences issued to Kerry.

Over 60 licences have been granted in the county to traditional pot fishing boats. Over half of the applicants for a licence in Kerry were unsuccessful. The scheme which was launched in 2003 is designed to register small fishing boats under 12 metres which have fished pots inshore.Nationally over 1,200 applications were received, around 120 of these were from Kerry but only 60 were successful. According to the Department of the Marine those who were not successful failed to demonstrate that they complied with the criteria laid down under the scheme. The scheme is only open to those with a track record of fishing in the Irish inshore sector.
