300,000 coffee cups collected during clean ups in Kerry and Limerick

300,000 coffee cups were collected during last year’s county clean-ups in Kerry and Limerick.

That accounted for 160 tonnes of waste thrown from vehicles.

It is estimated that around 250 million coffee cups are used around the country each year; these items are not recyclable in their current form.

Mindy O’Brien is part of the Environmental Pillar, which is a national network of 26 environmental organisations.

She is encouraging people to use their own cups when buying a coffee and says a levy should be put on single use items such as coffee cups:
