A grant of 30,000 euro has been made available by Kerry County Council to sports clubs, community centres and schools to assist them in paying water rates. This grant is a result of a motion put forward by Councillor Paul O Donohue at yesterday`s County Council meeting. Cllr. Paul O Donoghue proposed that Kerry County Council furnish an exemption of 50% on water charges to all sports clubs, community centres and schools. He said the council should be seen to assist voluntary organisations and exercise its social conscience through a partial exemption.Cllr. Michael Gleeson seconded the motion saying that sports clubs are the back bone of rural Ireland. Having examined the cost implications, a total exemption would cost the council 60,000 euro. The council finally unanimously agreed to make 30,000 euro available to assist sports clubs, community centres and schools in paying water rates.
