Hundreds of school pupils in Kerry are taking part in National Walk to School day today. The event is the centre piece of the Green Schools National Walk to School week. It’s a celebration of choosing active and sustainable transport to school and the event is now in its eight year. The number of children who walk to school has been on the decline since the 1980s. In 1981, 50 per cent of primary students walked to school but by 2011 this figure had fallen to just 25 per cent. 22 Kerry schools are taking part today and nationally it’s hoped 40,000 students will walk to school.
